The Comfort Zone

DENVER—After quitting his job, CU Boulder graduate, Ben Nash had saved enough money to pursue his hobbies and chase his dream of producing an album and launching his music career.

After working at Auto Nation Subaru West in Golden, Colorado for a year and three months, Ben had saved enough money to quit and focus on what really matters to him: Skiing and music.  Ben is an avid skier and has been skiing since he was young.  Ben worked as a ski instructor at Loveland resort in the winter between 2015 and 2016, but he has since learned that working as a ski instructor isn’t a very viable career.

After the 2016 ski season Ben began work at Auto Nation Subaru West, where he began to think more about his music career.  As an expert guitarist and singer, Ben is trying to launch his music career from the ground up.  “I play a multitude of different things, but I’d say it would fall into the alt indie rock folk category, I don’t really have a specific genre I set out to produce, Kind of whatever happens when I sit down,” said Ben.

Ben’s skiing is just a hobby, but he always tries to push himself further, putting himself into scarier situations to further his skill level.  “Like I say going into every year, to push myself as hard as I can… That’s where you really learn, your form’s not going to fall apart until you’re on something that puts you in the back seat and makes you scared, and you’re not going to get better” said Nash.

Ben’s skiing philosophy is what is driving his music.  This idea of pushing yourself by putting yourself outside of your comfort zone is directly applicable to music.  Ben said, “I think that concept applies to everything, in the sense of music, my comfort zone is sitting on my couch and playing music to myself, so putting myself out of my comfort zone is exposing myself to criticism and that’s what I’m trying to do.”
